Three generations of farmers see many changes

Four and a half year old Trevor Sladky likes farm life.

"He does enjoy helping, enjoys riding the tractor and being on the farm," his father, Kevin, said.

Kevin wouldn't mind it a bit if Trevor followed in his footsteps and became a farmer. After all, it's a career that not only suits him just fine, but it's also the career of his father, Ron, and his grandfather, Bernie.

The three generations of Sladky farmers have been working the land for more than 60 years.

Bernie learned to be a farmer from his father.

Eighteen Superior FFA members competed in 18 District 8 FFA Proficiency Award areas this week. The district review committee met in Blue Hill and announced the results and sixteen members earned first place recognition. Holdrege FFA Labor Auction and Beef Barbecue
The 20th Annual Holdrege FFA Labor Auction will be held March 22nd at the Phelps County Ag Center. A Barbecue Beef Meal will be served starting at 6:30pm at a cost of $7 for adults and $4 for Children. The Labor Auction will start at 7:30 pm with Ron Pfeifer calling the auction. All Holdrege FFA members will be sold on the Auction for 4 hours of labor. If the buyers want the FFA member for 8 hours of labor then they can double their bid. The third annual FFA Leadership Night was held January 19th in the Holdrege High School Cafeteria. Thirty-four FFA members along with numerous parents and guests were present for the ceremonies and Soup Supper sponsored by the Holdrege FFA Alumni Members. Cold Storage Facilities Now Eligible For USDA Facility Loan Program
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today said that the Farm Storage Facility Loan program has been amended to allow producers to build cold storage facilities to store their fresh fruits and vegetables. This program is part of USDA's 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative and uses discretionary authority provided by the 2008 Farm Bill authorizing the eligibility of cold storage facilities for fruits and vegetables. — Full Story »
 
USDA Asks for Comments on Final Environmental Assessment
On September 26, 2006, a legal settlement was signed between the National Wildlife Federation and FSA that limited the frequency of haying on CRP lands to once every ten years and grazing to once every five years in Kansas; with a suspension of haying and grazing during the primary nesting season (April 15 to July 15). The settlement stipulated that if a change to the frequency of haying and grazing or the primary nesting season (PNS) dates is desired, then an Environmental Assessment would be prepared that identifies the potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts of such a change.  — Full Story »
